ಬೆಳ್ತಂಗಡಿ ತಾಲೂಕಿನ ಶಿಬಾಜೆ ಗ್ರಾಮದಲ್ಲಿ "ಮೊಂಟೆತಡ್ಕ ಶ್ರೀದುರ್ಗಾಪರಮೇಶ್ವರಿ'ದೇವಾಲಯವಿದೆ.  "ಮೊಂಟೆ' ಎಂದರೆ ಬಿದಿರಿನಿಂದ ತಯಾರಿಸುವ ಒಂದು ರೀತಿಯ ಸಂಗೀತ ಉಪಕರಣ. ಇದನ್ನು ಹಸುವಿನ ಕೊರಳಿಗೆ ಕಟ್ಟುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇದು ಹೊಮ್ಮಿಸುವ ನಾದದ ಸಹಯಾದಿಂದಲೇ ಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹಸು ಎಲ್ಲಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಪತ್ತೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.  ತುಳು ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇದನ್ನು 'ಬೊಂಕ' ಎಂದೂ ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿದಿರಿನಿಂದ ತಯಾರಿಸಿದ ಭಿನ್ನ ನಾದವನ್ನು ಹೊಮ್ಮಿಸುವ "ಮೊಂಟೆ'ಗಳನ್ನೇ ಭಕ್ತಾದಿಗಳು ಹರಕೆಯಾಗಿ ಸಮರ್ಪಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದು, ಅದೇ ಮೊಂಟೆಯ ನಾದವನ್ನು ಮಹಾಪೂಜೆಯ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿರಾಡಿ ಪರ್ವತದ ಮಗ್ಗುಲಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಡಿನಿಂದದಾವೃತವಾದ ಶಿಬಾಜೆ ಗ್ರಾಮವು ನಳನಳಿಸುವ ತೋಟಗಳನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಮೈಮೇಲೆ ಹೊದ್ದುಕೊಂಡಂತಿದೆ. ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಋಷಿಗಳು ಲೋಕ ಮಾತೆಯಾದ ದುರ್ಗಾ ದೇವಿಗೆ ಧ್ಯಾನಿಸುವಾಗ "ವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಾಸುರ', 'ಸೈರಿಭಾಸುರ', 'ಕ್ರೋಢಾಸುರ' ಇವೇ ಮೊದಲಾದ ಕ್ರೂರ ರಾಕ್ಷಸರು ದಾಳಿ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಪ್ರಾಣಿ, ಪಶು, ಪಕ್ಷಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಂದು ತಿನ್ನುತ್ತ ಯಾಗ ಶಾಲೆಯನ್ನು ಹಾಳುಗೆಡವಿದರು. ಆಗ ದುರ್ಗಾ ದೇವಿಯನ್ನು ಋಷಿಗಳು ಮೊರೆ ಇಟ್ಟಾಗ ಜಗನ್ಮಾತೆಯು ತನ್ನ ಪರಿವಾರದ ರಕ್ತೇಶ್ವರಿ, ಚಾಮುಂಡಿ ಮತ್ತು ಭೈರವ ಇವೇ ಮೊದಲಾದ ತನ್ನ ಗಣಗಳೊಡಗೂಡಿ ರಾಕ್ಷಸರ ಸಂಹಾರ ಮಾಡಿದಳು. ಋಷಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕಾಪಾಡಿ ಮುಂದಕ್ಕೂ ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಸಕಲ ಜೀವ ಸಂಕುಲವನ್ನು ಕಾಪಾಡುವ ಅಭಯವನ್ನಿತ್ತಳು. ನಂತರ ದೇವಿಯು ಇದೇ 'ಮೊಂಟೆತಡ್ಕ' ಎಂಬ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಅದೃಶ್ಯಳಾದಳು ಎಂಬ ಐತಿಹ್ಯವಿದೆ. 

   ಹಿಂದಿನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಗ್ರಾಮದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸವಿದ್ದ ಬಿಲ್ಲವ ಜಾತಿಯ "ಕುಮಾರ' ಎಂಬಾತನು ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ದಟ್ಟ ಕಾನನದ ಮಧ್ಯೆ ಇದ್ದ ಈಚಲ ಮರದಿಂದ ಸೇಂದಿಯನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದು ಮಣ್ಣಿನ ಮಡಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿಟ್ಟು ಅದನ್ನು ಹಳ್ಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾರಾಟ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾ ಜೀವನ ಸಾಗಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದನು. ಹೀಗಿರಲೊಂದು ದಿನ ಮರದಿಂದ ಶೇಂದಿಯನ್ನು ಹೊತ್ತು ಕುಮಾರನು ಕೆಳಗಿಳಿಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ವನದುರ್ಗೆಯು ಉಯ್ನಾಲೆಯಾಡುತ್ತಾ, ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯ ಸೊಬಗನ್ನು ಆಸ್ವಾದಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ದೃಶ್ಯವನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ಮೂಕ ವಿಸ್ಮಿತನಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆಕೆಯ ಸಮೀಪಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಲು ಧೈರ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲದೇ ಮರದ ಮರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂತು ದೇವಿಯ ಪ್ರಭೆ ಮತ್ತು ರೂಪ ಲಾವಣ್ಯವನ್ನು ನೋಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಹೀಗೆ ಪ್ರತೀ ದಿನ ದೇವಿಯನ್ನು ನೋಡುತ್ತಾ ಮನೆಗೆ ತಡವಾಗಿ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬರುತ್ತಿರುವುದನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಿದ ಕುಮಾರನ ಹೆಂಡತಿ "ಕುಮಾರಿ¤'ಯು ಅನುಮಾನಗೊಂಡು ಮಾರನೇ ದಿನ ಗಂಡನನ್ನು ಹಿಂಬಾಲಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋದಳು. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವಿಯ ರೂಪವನ್ನು ನೋಡುತ್ತಾ ನಿಂತಿರುವ ಗಂಡನನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ತನ್ನ ಗಂಡ ಯಾವುದೋ ಒಬ್ಬ ಹೆಣ್ಣಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅನುರಕ್ತನಾಗಿರುವನೆಂದು ಭಾವಿಸಿದಳು.  ಅವನನ್ನು ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಶಬ್ದಗಳಿಂದ ಬೈಯ್ಯಲಾರಂಭಿಸಿದಳು. ಗಂಡ ಹೆಂಡತಿ ಇಬ್ಬರಿಗೂ ಕಂಡು ಕ್ರೋಧಗೊಂಡ ವನದುರ್ಗೆಯು ಇಬ್ಬರೂ ಕಲ್ಲಾಗಿ ಹೋಗುವಂತೆ ಶಪಿಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಈ ದಂಪತಿಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಮುಖ ದರ್ಶನವಾಗಬಾರದೆಂದು ದೇವಿಯು ಕೋಪದಿಂದ ಉತ್ತರಾಭಿಮುಖವಾಗಿ ಮುಖ ತಿರುಗಿಸಿ ಅಲ್ಲೇ ಸ್ಥಿರವಾಗಿ ನಿಂತಳೆಂದು ಎನ್ನುವ ಮತ್ತೂಂದು ಕತೆಯೂ ಇದೆ.

    ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಪೂಜೆಯ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಕ್ತಾದಿಗಳು ವಿವಿಧ ಸಂಗೀತ ವಾದ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಮೊಳಗಿಸುವಾಗ ಅದರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ನೇತುಹಾಕಲಾಗಿರುವ ಮೊಂಟೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕೈಗಳಿಂದ ಅಲ್ಲಾಡಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆಗ ವೈವಿಧ್ಯಮಯವಾದ ನಾದವು ಹೊರಹೊಮ್ಮುತ್ತದೆ. ಬಿದಿರಿನ ಮೊಂಟೆಯ ನಾದದಿಂದ ಸಂತುಷ್ಟಳಾಗುವ ವನದುರ್ಗೆಯು ನೆಲೆಸಿರುವ ಈ ಸ್ಥಳಕ್ಕೆ 'ಮೊಂಟೆತಡ್ಕ'ವೆಂಬ ಸ್ಥಳನಾಮವು ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತವಾಗಿದೆ. ವಿವಿಧ ರೋಗಗಳಿಂದ ಬಳಲುತ್ತಿರುವ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳು ತಮ್ಮ ರೋಗಗ್ರಸ್ತಾಂಗಗಳ ಬೆಳ್ಳಿಯ ಅಥವಾ ಚಿನ್ನದ ಪ್ರತಿರೂಪವನ್ನು ಹಾಗೂ ಶ್ವಾಸಕೋಶದ ವ್ಯಾಧಿ ಪೀಡಿತರು ಬೆಳ್ಳಿಯ ಸರಿಗೆ ಅಥವಾ ಬಾಯ ಹಗ್ಗವನ್ನು ಹರಕೆಯನ್ನಾಗಿ ಒಪ್ಪಿಸುವ ಪದ್ಧತಿ ಇದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಂಕುಮಾರ್ಚನೆ ಮಾಡಿಸಿದರೆ ಶೀಘ್ರವಾಗಿ ಕಂಕಣಬಲ ಕೂಡಿಬರುವುದೆಂಬ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯೂ ಇದೆ.
