The award was instituted by Udupi District Patrakartara Vedike in the name of young Rajesh Shibaje, in recognition of his significant work as a reporter.
This award is given in fond remembrance of journalist Rajesh Shibaje , a courageous reporter who brought the freedom struggle of Neriya gram into mainstream through reporting it in Janavahini. For this courageous work of his he was privileged with Academy Award. But, unfortunately he was not there to accept the award as he died in an accident at Kudremukh.
Rajesh shibaje was living in shibaje village, near to Sri Durgaparameshwari Temple.
